SUMMARY

If you attempt to remove a virtual machine from the master list in Virtual Server and then add it back or move a vmc file to an alternate location and try to add it back, you will likely receive an error.

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to add a virtual machine that has a name that is identical to a previously created or added virtual machine or when you change the path to the .vmc file and try to add the virtual machine back into virtual server you will likely receive the error "The virtual machine could not be added. The virtual machine configuration could not be added. A configuration with this name already exists."

CAUSE

This happens because virtual server creates a shortcut to each virtual machine added or created in the path <system drive>\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Virtual Server\Virtual Machines\ and doesn't remove this shortcut when the virtual machine is removed.

RESOLUTION

Open Windows Explorer and browse to <system drive>\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Virtual Server\Virtual Machines\ and delete the .vmc files for the virtual machines that are no longer listed in the Master Status list. Now try to add the virtual machine.
