Error Message: System Cannot Log You on Because Domain <Computername> Is Not Available

SUMMARY

An error "System Cannot Log You on Because Domain <Computername> Is Not Available" appears when you try to log on to Windows.

SYMPTOMS

When the user tries to log on to the computer in the Log On dialog, it will fail with the error "System Cannot Log You on Because Domain <Computername> Is Not Available". Log on using safe mode will not work either.

CAUSE

This error is usually caused by corrupted system files netman.dll and/or netshell.dll or other networking related system files.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you will need to run SFC (System File Checker) to verify the integrity of the system files. To run SFC, please follow the following instructions:
 
  1. Run Recovery Console. For more information on how to run Recovery Console, please refer to KB307654.
  2. Run the command:
sfc /scannow
 
Note: You might need to have your Windows CD on hand.
