General Recommendation before deploying a new update

The following steps can help you to deploy a new update to the infrastructure

    while reducing the risk/s:

1. Learn Microsoft Operations Framework (MOF):

     http://www.microsoft.com/technet/solutionaccelerators/cits/mo/mof/default.mspx

2. Read the attached "Release Notes" & "Read Me" (Its usually attached to the update

       of the specific manufacture.

3. Map the impact of the new update on the IT infrastructure and the business side.

Note: Its recommended to create a system baseline, so the impact of the new update

                   can be tested.

4. Create a backup/restore strategy and test it [e.g. Its highly recommended to have a complete DRP

(Disaster Recovery Plan) and test it on a regular basis].

Note: Its recommended to have a copy of the licenses, installation media etc.

5. Check the software/hardware vendor for commutability issue and

check the HCL (Hardware Compatibility List).

Note: Some applications, like Antivirus for Exchange may need to update to the latest

version/update before applying update to the Exchange system.

6. Update the server/s to the latest BIOS/Firmware/drivers etc.

Note: Its recommended to review the hardware vendor recommendations.

7. Deploy the new update to a test environment and check the result/s

according to the baseline that was created in step 3.

Note: A estimated downtime, risk assessment and roll back strategy can also be gather from

              the test step.

8. Create full backup to the system and to the system that have dependency to the

       system that will be updated.

9. Schedule the installation to non-work hour if it applicable.

10. Deploy the new update and test the update impact.

11. Document the changes.
