Article ID: 810161 - Last Review: February 1, 2007 - Revision: 3.8 Network Adapters Are Missing or Incorrect in Device Manager After You Run NTBackup to Restore System State Data
On This PageSYMPTOMSAfter you run the NTBackup utility (Ntbackup.exe) to fully
restore the System State data, network adapters may be missing or have
incorrect names in Device Manager. New wide area network (WAN) miniports (Layer
2 Tunneling Protocol [L2TP]) that were not present before you ran the restore
operation may now be present. You may not be able to remove the new adaptors
that appear in Device Manager and reinstall the missing ones. CAUSEThis problem occurs because only part of the Plug and Play
database is being restored. Therefore, the Plug and Play database is in an
inconsistent state. RESOLUTIONTo restore the System State data in future backups so that
devices work properly, follow these steps. NOTE: You must also apply this change to the Windows 2000 installation that will host the Ntbackup.exe restore process. Backups of System State data that are run before making this change will continue to cause the symptoms that are described in this article.
