"Local Device Name Is Already in Use" Error Message After You Interrupt a "NET USE" Command

SYMPTOMS

If you use the net use command to create a drive mapping but the mapping operation is interrupted before it completes, the drive letter may become inaccessible. If you then try to map the same driver letter again, you receive a "Local device name is already in use" error message.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem may occur when the Web Client service is running if the share to which the net use command refers is not accessible. If you stop the Web Client service, the problem does not occur.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.
