Bcc information is lost for journaled messages in Exchange 2000

When you journal e-mail messages in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server or in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, any Blind Carbon Copy (Bcc) information in the message is lost.

To resolve this problem, use the appropriate method.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

The English version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

Follow the instructions that are in the "More Information" section of this article to turn on the journaling feature.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. After you download this hotfix, you can journal messages and preserve the Bcc information of the message. By default, this feature is turned off. To turn on the journaling feature, add the following registry key on the server: After you have added the Parameters registry key, add the following registry key and values: The Exchange SMTP Service and the Information Store service must be restarted before this registry key is considered valid.

There are two known issues with this fix that are addressed in Exchange Server 2003:

• When you view the journaled message, the Bcc: line also contains the To: and Cc: line recipients. Third-party vendors who write journaling products are aware of this and are developing a workaround for this problem.
• If the journaled message has a double-byte character set (DBCS) display name, that information appears incorrectly on the Bcc: line.
