Word quits when you copy and paste portions of a document in Word 2002

When you copy and paste portions of a Word 2002 document, Word quits abruptly with the following error message: This behavior also occurs if you use a Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macro to perform a similar function. Specifically, Word quits when the macro tries to read the Selection.Range.Information VBA property.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel. To view the error signature after Word quits, follow these steps. Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Microsoft Word.
2. On the Help menu, click About Microsoft Word.
3. Click System Info.
4. Expand Office 10 Applications.
5. Click Office Event/Application Fault.
6. Scroll to the bottom of the log to find the date that Word quit and generated the error message described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
