DFS Manager Does Not Show DFS Roots

On a Windows 2000-based server that is using Microsoft Distributed File System (DFS), you may not be able to administer the DFS root by using Microsoft Management Console (MMC), Dfscmd.exe, or Dfsutil.exe after you restart the server or you restart the Distributed File System service. This problem may occur if the server is configured as described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article to use only DNS in replies to DFS "get referral" queries:

If you use Dfscmd.exe or Dfsutil.exe to add a DFS link, you may receive the following error message:
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.
When this problem occurs, clients can still access the DFS root.
System error 2662 has occurred
The problem occurs because the Distributed File System service does not check the registry settings correctly when the service is initialized.

Hotfix InformationA supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.
