Overview of the SQL 2000 Critical Update Wizard

Microsoft has released the SQL Critical Update Wizard to help to protect users who may be vulnerable to the Slammer worm. How to Download and Run the SQL Critical Update Wizard

Important Before you install the SQL Critical Update Wizard on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows 2000, or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, make sure that you are logged on to the computer as the local administrator, or as a user with administrator permissions.

To download and install only the SQL Critical Update Wizard:

1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
   http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=689832DB-297B-489F-9E87-8FD78AEEE64F (http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=689832DB-297B-489F-9E87-8FD78AEEE64F)
2. On the right side of the screen, click the appropriate language in the Choose Language box, and then click Change.
3. At the bottom of the page, click the link for the download file.
   
   Note The name of the download file depends on the language that you select to download, and uses the following naming convention, where NNN represents the code for the language that you are trying to download:
   SQL-MSDE-CriticalUpdate_NNN.msi
   For example, if you select the English language, the download file is named SQL-MSDE-CriticalUpdate_ENU.msi.
4. Click Save to save the SQL-MSDE-CriticalUpdate_NNN.msi file in the folder that you select.
5. In Windows Explorer, double-click the SQL-MSDE-CriticalUpdate_NNN.msi file that you downloaded in step 4.
6. When the MSDE 2000/SQL Server 2000 Critical Update dialog box appears, click Next.
7. Read the license agreement, click I accept the terms in the License Agreement, and then click Next.
   
   Note If SQL Server Desktop Engine (also known as MSDE2000) or SQL Server 2000 is not installed on your computer, or if you have one of these products but have already updated it to a version that is not affected by the Slammer worm, you receive the following message:
   Critical Update Not Required
8. When you are prompted to install the update, click Install.
9. When you receive a message that indicates that the installation was successful, click Finish.

If the Critical Update Is Unsuccessful or If Additional Action Is Required

While you are installing the SQL Critical Update Wizard, you may receive a message that states that the critical update was unsuccessful or that additional action is required. The following items describe messages that you may receive, and the actions that you may want to take if you receive them.

"Critical Update Unsuccessful" Messages

• If you receive the following message, try to install the update again by using an account with administrator permissions:
  The user account does not have sufficient privileges to run the patch. Please see your system administrator for assistance.
  To do this, log on to the computer as an administrator, or contact your local administrator for more help.
• If you receive one of the following messages, contact Microsoft Product Support Services:
  There was an error updating Microsoft SQL Server 2000 or Microsoft SQL Desktop Engine 2000.
  
  -or-
  
  There was an error updating Microsoft SQL Server 2000 or Microsoft SQL Desktop Engine 2000 in the following languages: languages list.
  To contact Microsoft Product Support Services, click More Information in the MSDE 2000/SQL Server 2000Critical Update dialog box. This opens the following Microsoft Web site, where you can find information about how to contact Microsoft Product Support Services:

"Critical Update Further Action Required" Messages

If you receive the following message, install the appropriate updates for additional languages: In this message, your language is the language version of the SQL Critical Update Wizard that you installed, and languages list is the list of additional languages in which MSDE 2000 or SQL Server 2000 is installed on your computer.

To install the appropriate updates for additional languages, return to the SQL Critical Update Wizard download page, locate the correct update for the additional language versions of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 or MSDE 2000, and then download and run the additional updates.

Advanced User Section

Advanced users can select to install the SQL Critical Update Wizard by using some of the command-line options that are supported by Windows Installer and this update. To install the update by using command-line options:

1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:

2. On the right side of the screen, click the appropriate language in the Choose Language box, and then click Change.
3. At the bottom of the page, click the link for the download file.
4. Click Save to save the SQL-MSDE-CriticalUpdate_NNN.msi file in the folder that you select.
5. Click Start, click Run, type the following command in the Open box, and then click OK:
   msiexec /i updatepath\SQL-MSDE-CriticalUpdate_NNN.msi DETAILS=1
   In this command, update path is the path for the update file that you saved to your local drive, and NNN is the language version of the update file.
   
   Note You can append the /l*v Logfile.txt switch to the command line so that a log file is created. You can also append the/q switch to the command line so that the MSDE 2000/SQLServer 2000 Critical Update dialog box, the End User License Agreement Setup dialog boxes, and the End User License Agreement do not appear during Setup.
6. Follow the instructions in the wizard to complete the installation.

How to Run the SQL Critical Update Wizard in Logging Mode

To run the SQL Critical Update Wizard in Logging mode, use the DETAILS=1 switch as described in the previous steps.

When you use the DETAILS=1 switch to install the SQL Critical Update Wizard, an additional Show Details button appears in several of the update dialog boxes. Clicking Show Details shows a log file that contains the following information:

• The instance name of MSDE 2000 or SQL Server 2000
• The product level of MSDE 2000 or SQL Server 2000 (for example, SP2)
• The language of MSDE 2000 or SQL Server 2000 (for example, English)
• The version of the Sqlservr.exe and Ssnetlib.dll files that are installed on your computer
• A summary of the actions that the update will try to perform when you update your computer (in the "Ready to Install" Setup screen)
• A summary of the actions that the update tried to perform when you updated your computer, and the results of those actions (in the Setup screens that appear after the "Ready to Install" Setup screen)
