SYMPTOMS

When you perform some actions that are related to a Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) device on a Windows XP-based computer, you may experience the following symptoms:

Symptom 1:

When you try to transfer lots of files or a single large file from a Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) device, such as a Sony MemoryStick, you may receive one of the following error messages:

Error message 1
The computer cannot detect the camera or scanner. Please make sure the device is turned on and is properly connected to the computer.
Error message 2
The current picture cannot be copied. To copy this picture, click "Try again." To stop copying, click "Cancel."
If you do click Try again, the error message returns.

Symptom 2:

When you try to transfer a single large file from a USB PTP camera to local hard disk drive (HDD) in Windows Explorer, the copy window stops responding for about 2 minutes. After that, the copy window disappears and a 0 byte file is created in the target HDD.

Symptom 3:

When you try to transfer a single large file from a USB PTP camera to local hard disk drive (HDD) by using the Scanner and Camera Wizard, the file transfer fails immediately, and you receive the following error message:
Scanner and Camera Wizard The current picture could not be copied.
To copy this picture, click "Try Again." To stop coping, click "Cancel."
If you do click Try again, the error message returns.

CAUSE

Symptom 1

Symptom 1 occurs because the PTP driver that is supplied by Microsoft has the following limitations:
  • File transfers are limited to 2048 files at the same time.
  • Files must be less than 210 megabytes (MB).
Symptom 2

Symptom 2 occurs because an error exists in the PTP driver (ptpusd.dll).

Symptom 3

Symptom 3 occurs because an error occurs in the Scanner and Camera Wizard.

RESOLUTION

Symptom 1

Apply the hotfix that is described in this article to resolve this problem.

Symptom 2 and Symptom 3

You can connect the camera by using USB Mass Storage Class (MSC) instead of PTP. Then, transfer large files by using Windows Explorer.
