Unsuccessful Authentication Causes a Memory Leak in the Kerberos Component of Lsass.exe

SYMPTOMS

Private Lsass.exe bytes on a client computer may be leaking. When this occurs, you see private bytes increase steadily over time. You also see that the value in the VM Size column in Task Manager increases each time that access is denied when you try to connect to a remote print server or to view the resources on a remote server.

CAUSE

The leak occurs because resources are not released when Kerberos authentication does not succeed. Authentication might not succeed if the client computer's time and the server's time are not synchronized with the domain controller.

RESOLUTION

Service Pack Information

Hotfix Information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.

MORE INFORMATION

To troubleshoot a scenario under which the leak may occur, create a batch file that repeatedly runs a "net view" command against the server. The "net view" commands do not succeed and generate "Access denied" messages. The value of the VM Size column in Task Manager steadily increases; more than 10 megabytes (MB) may leak in 10 minutes.
