Cannot use digital video camera as pass-through in Movie Maker 2

When you try to capture video from your analog video camera or VCR and you use your digital video (DV) camera as a pass-through device, the video is not recorded in the Video Capture Wizard of Microsoft Windows Movie Maker 2.

This problem occurs because Movie Maker 2 does not support the use of a DV camera as a pass-through device when capturing video.

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP. Windows XP Service Pack 2 includes Windows Movie Maker 2.1. Windows Movie Maker 2.1 supports DV pass-through.

To work around this problem and use your DV camera to capture video in Movie Maker 2, you must first record the analog source to your DV camera. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Connect your analog video camera or VCR to a DV camera.

2. Switch the DV camera to the Playback (VCR or VTR) mode, and then press Record on your DV camera.
3. To start recording the video from the analog video source to your DV camera, press Play on the analog video source.
4. After you have recorded the video to tape in your DV camera, connect your DV camera to the IEEE 1394 port on your computer.
5. In Movie Maker 2, use the Video Capture Wizard to select the DV camera, and then capture the video from the tape in the DV camera.

To capture video, Movie Maker 2 supports the use of both the following devices:

• An analog device, for example, an analog video camera or VCR.
• A digital device, for example, a DV camera to capture video.

Some DV cameras are equipped with analog pass-through capability that converts (translates) analog input into a digitized output. With these DV cameras, you can connect your analog video camera or VCR through your DV camera to your computer.
