You may receive a Stop 0x00000050 (Bugcheck 50) error message in Usbhub.sys if a USB device returns a zero length packet for a string descriptor request. The Windows 2000 USB driver, Usbhub.sys, does not expect a zero length result for the string descriptor. This update causes Usbhub.sys to verify the length of the returned result, and then fail the request if it is a zero length.

An "Unspecified Error Occurred" Error Message Occurs When You Run Chkdsk

When you run the Chkdsk utility on a volume that is formatted with the NTFS file system, if a security descriptor stream is greater than 4 gigabytes (GB), you may receive the following error message:

CHKDSK is verifying security descriptors (stage 3 of 3)
An unspecified error occurred.

Update to Create an AllowedExactPaths Registry Key

This update helps to increase Windows security by creating an AllowedExactPaths registry entry that you can use to permit access only to registry values under a listed key.

Journal Wrap Errors Occur When You Restart the File Replication Service

The File Replication service (FRS) applies many security settings to the staging directories during startup. This behavior may cause a journal wrap if there are many files are in the staging directory or if you have a small journal configured. This update causes the FRS not to stamp the Access Control Lists (ACLs) during startup.

Stop Error Intermittently Occurs When a Server Is Under a Heavy I/O Load

Under a heavy input/output (IO) load, the redirector may cause a Stop error (bugcheck) by initializing a cache map for a file that is already closed.

On a Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) server cluster where either Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is installed, the following event message may be logged each time you start the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant service:

Error message ID 51b corresponds to error message ID 1307. Error message ID 1307 has the following definition:

ERROR_INVALID_OWNER

This error indicates that the security ID may not be assigned as the owner of this object.

The Cluster service cannot restore the correct security descriptor with this owner (in this case, the local computer) because it does not have the restore privilege enabled in the process token.

"The Device Reported an Error On a Request to MS_UpdateNtmsOmidInfo" Error Message Occurs When You Try to Run NTBackup.exe

When you log on as a member of the Backup Operators security group and you run the Windows Backup utility (NTBackup.exe), if you select the New Media backup option, you may receive the following error message when you start the backup process:

The device reported an error on a request to MS_UpdateNtmsOmidInfo.
Error reported: 5.

An inconsistency was encountered on the media in 4mm DDS. Do not append to this media

This behavior occurs because the Backup Operator is not permitted to update the tape label.

Automatic Updates Feature Does Not Re-Scan the Operating System for Installed Updates After the Updates Are Staged for Installation

After the Windows Automatic Updates feature stages updates for installation, when a user visits the Windows Update Web site and installs the same updates, the Automatic Updates feature reinstalls those updates.

Intermittent Stop 0x00000024 Error Occurs When an Antivirus Program Is Running

When you turn on an antivirus program on a Windows 2000-based server, you may receive intermittent Stop error messages similar to the following Stop error message:
