Article ID: 815316 - Last Review: October 27, 2006 - Revision: 2.5 Atapi Driver Does Not Recognize the Hard Disk After You Hot-Swap the Disk
On This PageSYMPTOMSAfter
you hot-swap the hard disk in a Windows 2000-based computer, the system may
not recognize the hard disk. However, if you initiate a bus scan by selecting
the Scan for New Hardware option in Device Manager, the system does
recognize the hard disk. CAUSEIf a power-on hard reset occurs while you are hot-swapping
the disk, the Atapi driver does not wait for the disk to complete the reset
protocol and
to enter an online state (become ready). Therefore, the Atapi driver ignores the
hot-swapped hard
disk. RESOLUTIONHotfix InformationA supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article.
