Access Violation When Inetinfo Receives Mail That Contains a Header of More Than 64 KB

SYMPTOMS

When the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol Service (SMTPSvc) component receives a mail message that contains a header of more than 64 kilobytes (KB), this may generate an access violation.

CAUSE

If the size of a mail header is more than about 64 KB, SMTPSvc shuts down incorrectly because it does not synchronize threads. Because SMTPSvc works as a part of Internet Information Services (IIS), the access violation occurs in the Inetinfo.exe file.

The English version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.
