Microsoft has released updates to the Microsoft Office XP Input Method Editor (IME) and the Microsoft Office XP Multilingual User Interface (MUI) Pack. These updates offer the highest levels of stability and security available for these components. These updates help to ensure the compatibility between the Input Method Editor in Microsoft Office XP and Microsoft Windows 2003 Server. The Office XP Input Method Editor Update: KB816218 for Multilingual User Interface Pack and the Office XP Input Method Editor Update: KB816218 are part of Microsoft’s continued effort to provide the latest product updates to customers.

How to Download and Install the Updates

Important Before you install this update, make sure that the following requirements have been met.

• Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0
  Before you install this update, you must install Windows Installer 2.0 or later. For additional information about this requirement, see the "Windows Installer Update Requirements" section of this article.

Client Updates

If you installed Office XP from a CD-ROM, you have the following two options:

• Use the Office Product Updates Web site to automatically install all the latest updates that include all available service packs and public updates.
• Install only the Office XP Input Method Editor Update: KB816218 for Multilingual User Interface Pack and the Office XP Input Method Editor Update: KB816218 by following the steps described later in this article.

Note Microsoft recommends that you install the client update by using the Office Product Updates Web site. The Office Product Updates Web site detects your particular installation of Microsoft Office and prompts you to install exactly what you must have to make sure that your Office installation is completely up-to-date.

Office Product Updates Web Site

To have the Office Product Updates Web site detect the required updates that you must install on your computer, visit the following Microsoft Web site: After detection is complete, you receive a list of recommended updates for your approval. Click Start Installation to complete the process.

Install Only the Office XP Input Method Editor Update: KB816218 for Multilingual User Interface Pack and the Office XP Input Method Editor Update: KB816218

Follow these steps to install the Office XP Input Method Editor Update: KB816218 for Multilingual User Interface Pack:

1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
   Click to download the Client Update (http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/a/3/ba37afdb-9a9b-4b10-b2d8-55c53d0db84d/officexp-kb816218-client-eng.exe)
2. Click Save to save the OfficeXP-KB816218-Client-eng.exe file to the selected folder.
3. In Windows Explorer, double-click OfficeXP-KB816218-Client-eng.exe.
4. If you are prompted to install the update, click Yes.
5. Click Yes to accept the license agreement.
6. When you are prompted to do so, insert your Office XP CD-ROM , and then click OK.
7. When you receive a message that indicates the installation was successful, click OK.

Note After you install the update, you cannot remove it. To revert to an installation before the update was installed, you must remove Office XP, and then install it again from the original CD-ROM.

Follow these steps to install the Office XP Input Method Editor Update: KB816218:

1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:

4. If you are prompted to install the update, click Yes.
5. Click Yes to accept the license agreement.
6. When you are prompted to do so, insert your Office XP CD-ROM, and then click OK.
7. When you receive a message that indicates the installation was successful, click OK.

Administrative Update

There is not an administrative version of the Office XP Input Method Editor Update: KB816218 for Multilingual User Interface Pack or the Office XP Input Method Editor Update: KB816218. The updates includes one executable file that must be run on each client computer that runs Japanese Office XP.

To deploy these updates, you can save the .exe file to a file server, and then use any of the following methods:

• Add a line to the NT logon script or Active Directory Computer Startup script that instructs the user’s computer to run the file.
• Use software distribution software, such as Microsoft System Management Server (SMS), to run a script that instructs the file to be run on the user’s computer.
• Provide users with a command-line or batch file that will run the installation for the user.
• Instruct users to locate the file on the file server, and then start the installation by double-clicking the file.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

1. Click Start, and then click Search.
2. In the Search Results pane, click All files and folders under Search Companion.
3. In the All or part of the file name box, type Imjp8.ime, and then click Search.
4. In the list of files, right-click Imjp8.ime, and then click Properties.
5. On the Version tab, determine the version of IME that is installed on your computer.

Note If the Office XP Input Method Editor Update: KB816218 for Multilingual User Interface Pack or the Office XP Input Method Editor Update: KB816218 is already installed on your computer, you receive the following error message when you try to install the update:

Windows Installer Update Requirements

To install the updates described in this article requires Windows Installer 2.0 or later. Cannot Input Japanese Characters
When you are logged on to a Windows Terminal Server Client without administrator rights, you cannot input Japanese characters in the IME for Japanese.

Personal Information Stored in Custom Dictionary
Personal information, such as your telephone number, that you type in the IME is saved in your custom dictionary. Information in the custom dictionary can be exploited by a malicious user. This update helps prevent personal information from being saved in your custom dictionary.

Interactive User Can Change Administrators IME Registry Entries
This update helps to prevent an interactive user from changing or deleting the Administrators IME entries in the system hive.
