How to configure the File Replication Service to allow fewer sharing violations that block replication

This article describes how to configure the File Replication Service (FRS) to permit fewer sharing violations that block replication. The Install Override feature permits FRS to override sharing violations on file installs. This article describes how to use the File Replication Service Flags command-line script tool (FrsFlags.vbs) to configure the Install Override feature of FRS in Windows Server 2003.

FrsFlags.vbs is included in the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools. Use this tool to set or clear the FrsFlags attribute for replica objects in Active Directory. The FrsFlags attribute on a replica set determines whether the Install Override is enabled or disabled. Set the FrsFlags attribute to turn on the Install Override feature. Clear the FrsFlags attribute to turn off the Install Override feature.

FrsFlags uses the following syntax:

frsflags[-s][-u][-d][ReplicaName][DomainName]

The parameters that frsflags uses are listed as follows:

-s: Use this parameter to set the FrsFlags attribute for a replica set.
-u: Use this parameter to clear the FrsFlags attribute for a replica set.
-d: Use this parameter to display the current value of the FrsFlags flag for a replica set.
ReplicaName: This parameter specifies the name of the replica set. TheReplicaName can either be a domain-based DFS replica or a SYSVOL replica.
DomainName: This parameter specifies the full domain name.

Note For SYSVOL replicas, use SYSVOL. (SYSVOL is not case-sensitive.)

Examples

To set the FrsFlags attribute on the ROOT|DFS replica in the DomainName domain, use the following command:

frsflags –s ROOT|DFS DomainName.com

To view the status of the Install Override feature on a specified replica set, use the Ntfrsutl.exe command-line tool. To do so, type the following line at the command prompt:

ntfrsutl sets ComputerName

You receive output similar to the following:

Disabled :  RepSetObjFlags: 00000000 Flags [<Flags Clear>]      
Enabled  :  RepSetObjFlags: 00000001 Flags [InstallOverride]
