SYMPTOMS

When the Out of Box Experience (OOBE) wizard starts after you install the OEM version of Microsoft Windows XP Embedded with Service Pack 1, some of your USB devices may stop responding.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if a USB port stops working. A USB port may stop working because of a conflict between a USB 2.0 controller and a USB 1.1 controller.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, connect your USB device to a different USB port.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.
