SYMPTOMS

Computers that have removable disk device controllers, such as CardBus or Memory Stick, may take a long time to resume from standby if there is a disk in the controller.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.

MORE INFORMATION

Windows needs immediate access to paging file contents when it comes out of standby. The Atapi.sys driver must wait for devices that hold paging files to be available when Windows needs them. This causes the Atapi.sys driver to take long time when resuming.

When Windows is resuming, the driver does not have to wait for the disk devices that do not contain paging files. This reduces the time that it takes to resume from standby.
