The Title Bar Displays the Web Site Address Instead of the Web Site Title

SYMPTOMS

When you open a new Internet Explorer window and visit a Web site, the title bar displays the Web site address instead of the title of the Web site.

For example, when you visit http://www.microsoft.com, the title bar may display "http://www.microsoft.com" instead of "Microsoft Corporation."

CAUSE

This problem may occur if both of the following conditions are true:
  • You already have one or more Internet Explorer windows open.

    -and-
  • You turn on the Use automatic configuration script option in Internet Explorer.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack for Windows 2000 that contains this hotfix.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 3, when used with Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
