SYMPTOMS

When you check the spelling in an e-mail message that uses the Portuguese (Brazil) language, Microsoft Outlook Express 6 for Windows may unexpectedly quit with the following error message:

c0000005 (access violation)

This problem may occur if the e-mail message contains two numbers that are the same and that are separated by a hyphen (for example, 50-50). The issue is caused by a problem with the Microsoft Office 2000 Portuguese (Brazil) Proofing Tools.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
