On This PageSYMPTOMSIf you perform a backup operation or a restore operation by using the Microsoft Windows backup utility (Ntbackup.exe), and you back up to an Advanced Intelligent Tape (AIT) tape drive that has a Universal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0 interface, the operation may not succeed. If this problem occurs, you receive the following error message in the backup report: Error: An inconsistency was encountered on the requested media. CAUSEThis problem may occur if the USB tape drive uses the USB storage driver (Usbstor.sys). When a USB 2.0 tape drive uses Usbstor.sys, the driver experiences an input/output (I/O) queuing issue that may cause the backup or restore operation to be unsuccessful. RESOLUTIONWindows Server 2003Hotfix informationA supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.
