When you upgrade Microsoft Office XP to Office 2003 on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, or on a Windows XP-based computer, when you try to use the English Grammar feature, English Grammar does not work. Also, Smart Tags are missing from your Office programs.

This problem may occur if you have not installed Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4) or Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1).

To resolve this problem, download and install either Windows 2000 SP4 or Windows XP SP1. To install and download these service packs and any updates that you want, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

If you cannot install one of these service packs, follow these steps to work around the problem:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Microsoft Word.
  2. Click Tools, and then click Spelling and Grammar.

This triggers an Install On-Demand of the files that are required for the English Grammar feature to function correctly.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
