FIX: Error Message 3628 May Occur When You Run a Complex Query

SYMPTOMS

Under rare conditions, you may receive the following error message when SQL Server tries to optimize a fairly complex query:

Server: Msg 3628, Level 16, State 1, Procedure XYZ, Line 199 A floating point exception occurred in the user process. Current transaction is canceled

The queries that trigger this error typically involve one or more subqueries, joins, and aggregate functions.

Hotfix information

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4.
