SYMPTOMS

A lazy aggregation might fail and you receive the following error message, after Analysis Services performs an incremental update of a changing dimension:

Error during lazy aggregation of partition xxxxx in cube xxxxx

This error message is logged in the application event log.

After Analysis Services performs an incremental update of a changing dimension, it deletes the existing aggregations and indexes for the cubes that contain that changing dimension. Then, it rebuilds the aggregations and indexes in the background. The rebuild is required because members in a changing dimension may move positions in the dimension hierarchy during an incremental update.

The error message shown earlier in the article indicates that Analysis Services did not rebuild aggregations and indexes.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem you can either:
  • Perform a full process of cubes after an incremental update of changing dimensions.

    -or-
  • Perform an incremental update of changing dimensions by using the FullReaggregate option.
The FullReaggregate option is a new functionality in SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services Service Pack 3.
