SYMPTOMS

In Windows Task Manager, Microsoft Office OneNote 2007 - Windows taskbar or Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 - Windows taskbar is listed on the Applications tab as a running program. This behavior may occur although you have not started OneNote and OneNote does not appear to be running.

Note To start Windows Task Manager, press CTRL+ALT+DEL, and then click Task Manager.

CAUSE

This behavior is caused by the quick launch functionality of Side Note. When you start the Microsoft Windows operating system, the quick launch functionality of Side Note also starts.

If the Place OneNote icon in the taskbar option is turned on in OneNote, the quick launch functionality of Side Note runs in the background. The quick launch functionality of Side Note is listed in Windows Task Manager as Microsoft Office OneNote 2007 - Windows taskbar or as Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 - Windows taskbar.

RESOLUTION

To turn off the quick launch functionality of Side Note, right-click the Open new side note icon in the notification area, and then click Remove OneNote Icon. When you do this, OneNote does not run in the background. Additionally, OneNote is not listed as a running program in Windows Task Manager when OneNote is not running.

To restore the quick launch functionality of Side Note, follow these steps:
  1. To start OneNote, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office, and then click the version of OneNote that you have installed on the computer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. In the Options dialog box, click Other in the Category list.
  4. In the Other section, click to select the Place OneNote icon in the taskbar check box.
  5. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.
Important The OneNote 2007 Screen Clipper and Launcher or theMicrosoft Office OneNote 2003 Quick Launch shortcut is required for the correct operation of the quick launch functionality of Side Note. If the shortcut is missing from the Startup folder, run the "Detect and Repair" feature to complete the restoration of the quick launch functionality of Side Note. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start OneNote. To do this, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office, and then click the version of OneNote that you have installed on the computer.
  2. On the Help menu, click Detect and Repair.
  3. In the Detect and Repair dialog box, click to select the Restore my shortcuts while repairing check box (if this check box is not selected already), and then click Start.
