FIX: Host Names That Are Sent in Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Are Limited to 16 Characters

SYMPTOMS

Devices whose machine names are longer than 16 characters will appear on other servers with the name truncated to only 16 characters. The other servers where the name is truncated are dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) server administration servers and DHCP-controlled DNS servers.

CAUSE

The Windows CE DHCP client sends the host name to the DHCP server in DHCP network packets. The client uses the local machine name and truncates the name to 16 characters.

MORE INFORMATION

This update enables host names of up to 255 characters if the host name is set in the DhcpSendOptions registry key. If the host name is not specified in this registry key, the local machine name is used and is still limited to 16 characters.
