The 802.1X PEAP Authentication Method Is Overridden When You Install the Cisco Client Utility with the Aironet Adapter

After you install a Cisco Aironet wireless network adapter and then start the Wireless Configuration service, you may experience all of the following symptoms:

• When you open the properties dialog box for the network adapter and then click the Authentication tab, PEAP appears in the EAP type list. You expect the Protected EAP (PEAP) component that was installed with Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4) to appear in this list.
• When you click Properties to view the properties of the PEAP item, all subsequent dialog boxes are different from what you expect.
• If you remove either the Cisco Aironet Client utility or PEAP by using the Cisco installer program, the wireless network adapter properties are not returned to their listed states from before you installed the Cisco items.

This issue occurs when both of the following conditions are true:

• You install the Cisco Aironet Client utility on a Windows 2000 SP4-based computer.
  
  -and-
• When you install the Cisco Aironet Client utility, the PEAP option is selected.

This Cisco utility must be installed when you install the Cisco Aironet wireless network adapter on a Windows 2000-based computer. This permits you to select the wireless network to connect to. However, when you install the Cisco client utility with the PEAP option selected, it makes changes to the Windows 2000 SP4 user interface, as described in the "Symptoms" section of this article. These changes override the Windows 2000 SP4 802.1X PEAP authentication method.

To resolve this issue, contact Cisco to obtain an updated version of the Aironet Client utility.
