FIX: A Parallel Query May Generate an Access Violation After You Install SQL Server 2000 SP3

SYMPTOMS

After you install SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3), a query that uses a parallel plan may fail and cause an access violation in the ParallelPageSharedData::AddRef() function.

Hotfix information

The English version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:

Disable parallelism for the specific query by using the OPTION (MAXDOP 1) clause.

-or-
Disable parallelism server-wide by setting the sp_configure parameter max degree of parallelism to 1.

-or-
Use trace flag 683 that in included in SQL Server Post SP3 hotfix builds 8.00.0765 and later. If you enable this trace flag, the pre-SQL Server 2000 SP3 parallel scan behavior is enabled, and the access violation does not occur.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4.
