XL2000: Cannot Open Workbook That Contains a Large Pivot Table

When you create a large pivot table in an Excel 2000 workbook, and then save and close the file, you cannot reopen the workbook.

When you try to reopen the workbook, the 'Opening filename' indicator on the Excel status bar goes about halfway, and then the workbook disappears. If no other workbooks are open at that time, the file name of the workbook remains in the Excel title bar.
