Publication may not print when you use the Acrobat Distiller 5.0.5, 6.0, or 7.0 printer driver in Publisher 2007 and in Publisher 2003

When you print a publication in Microsoft Office Publisher 2007 or in Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 by using the Adobe Acrobat Distiller 5.0.5, 6.0, or 7.0 printer driver, your publication may not print.

This problem may occur if both the following conditions are true:

• You print your Publisher publication as separations or as composite cyan-magenta-yellow-black (CYMK).
• You use the Adobe Acrobat Distiller version 5.0.5, 6.0, or 7.0 printer driver.

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Print Your Publication to a PostScript File and Use Adobe Acrobat Distiller as a Standalone Program

To do this, follow these steps:

1. Open the publication that you want to print in Publisher.
2. On the File menu, click Print.
3. In the Print dialog box, change the Name box to Acrobat Distiller, and then click Properties.
4. On the Adobe PDF Settings tab, click to clear the Do not send fonts to Distiller check box, and then click OK.
5. In the Print dialog box, click Advanced Print Settings.
6. On the Separations tab, change the Output box to either Composite CYMK or Separations.
   
   Make any other print settings changes that you want, and then click OK.
7. In the Print dialog box, click to select the Print to file check box, and then click OK.
8. In the Print to File dialog box, type a file name with a .ps extension in the File name box, and then click Save.
   
   Note Make a note of the location where you save the file.
9. After the file has been printed to file, start Adobe Acrobat Distiller.
   
   To do this, click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Acrobat Distiller (version number).
   
   Adobe Acrobat Distiller starts.
10. On the File menu, click Open.
11. In the Acrobat Distiller - Open PostScript File dialog box, locate and open the file that you printed to file in steps 7 and 8.
12. In the Acrobat Distiller - Specify PDF File Name dialog box, type a file name with a .pdf extension in the File name box, and then click Save.

Method 2: Set Up a Different Printer Driver to Print to the Adobe Acrobat Distiller Port

To do this, follow these steps:

1. Set up Acrobat Distiller with appropriate default job options. To do so, follow these steps:
   1. Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click (version number).
      
      Adobe Distiller starts.
   2. On the Default Settings (Distiller 6) or Job Options (Distiller 5) list, select an appropriate set of job options.
      
      Typically, this is Press Quality or Press Ready.
   3. On the File menu, click Exit.
2. Add a new printer driver to use with Distiller.
   
   This should be a color PostScript Level 3 driver that supports the paper sizes that you want to use. Publisher ships with a color PostScript Level 3 driver named the Generic Color PS for Commercial Printing driver. The following instructions assume that you will use this driver, but you can substitute a different driver that also meets these criteria.
   1. Click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.
   2. Double-click Add a Printer.
      
      The Add Printer Wizard starts.
   3. Click Next.
   4. Click Local Printer Attached to This Computer, and then click Next.
   5. Click Use the Following Port, and then select the port on the list that has a name that is similar to the following:
      (path)\*.pdf (Adobe PDF Port)
   6. Click Next.
   7. Click Have Disk.
      
      The Install From Disk dialog box appears.
   8. Click Browse.
      
      The Locate File dialog box appears.
   9. Locate the folder that contains the driver .inf file.
      
      In this example, the folder that contains the driver .inf file is the following (assuming that you installed Microsoft Publisher in its default folder):
      C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11
   10. Click Open.
   11. Click OK, and then follow the remaining instructions that appear on the screen to complete the Add Printer Wizard.
3. Print to the new printer driver.
   
   Do not click to select the Print to File check box in the Print dialog box.
   
   If you are using Adobe Acrobat 6, the Create PDF File dialog box appears. You can select a file name and a folder to save your .pdf file in.
   
   If you are using Adobe Acrobat 5, the Create PDF File dialog box does not appear. Instead, a .pdf file with the same name as the publication is created in the folder that was listed in the name of the port in step 2e.
   
   In both cases, Adobe Acrobat Distiller uses the .pdf file conversion settings that you chose in step 1b.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Adobe Acrobat 5.0.5, 6.0, and 7.0.
