Japanese 106/109 keyboard uses an English 101/102 keyboard layout when you connect to a terminal server in a terminal services session

When you use a Japanese 106/109 keyboard, and you connect to a terminal server in a Terminal Services session on a Windows 2000-based client computer, the keyboard may use an English Standard 101/102 keyboard layout instead of the expected Japanese keyboard layout.

This issue may occur if either of the following conditions is true:

• You are using a Universal Serial Bus (USB) Japanese 106/109 keyboard.
• You are using a USB Japanese 106/109 keyboard that is not defined in the Keyboard.inf file.

This issue occurs if the Plug and Play (PNP) ID of a connected keyboard device is not defined in the Keyboard.inf file. In this scenario, Windows 2000 handles the keyboard as a Human Interface Devices (HID) keyboard device, and it uses the English Standard 101/102 keyboard layout for the HID keyboard device.

To work around this issue, change the keyboard device driver to use a Japanese keyboard that is defined in the Keyboard.inf file on the Terminal Services client computer. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management.
2. In the left pane, click Device Manager.
3. In the right pane, expand Keyboards, right-click the HID keyboard, and then click Properties.
4. Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.
   
   The Upgrade Device Driver Wizard starts.
5. Click Next.
6. On the Install Hardware Device Drivers page, click Display a list of the known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver, and then click Next.
7. On the Select a Device Driver page, click Show all hardware of this device class.
8. On the Select a Device Driver page, specify a Japanese keyboard driver. To do so, follow these steps:
   1. Under Manufacturers, click the manufacturer of the keyboard. For example, click Fujitsu.
   2. Under Models, click the model that you want. For example, click Fujitsu 109 USB Keyboard.
   3. Click Next, and then follow the instructions on the remaining pages of the wizard to install the keyboard driver.
9. Restart the computer.
