Gather Information
To start to troubleshoot issues with SharePoint Team Services,
questions must be answered to help understand how SharePoint Team Services was
installed.
- How did you install SharePoint Team Services:
- Did you run the STSwiz.exe file from the Project Server
CD?
- Did you run SetupSE.EXE /ND or
SetupSE.EXE /existing site
from the Microsoft Office CD?
If you answer "Yes" to either of these installation
questions, the SharePoint Team Services installation was started
correctly. - How do you connect to SharePoint Team Services?
- Do you connect by using the local Intranet?
- Do you connect by using the Extranet?
If you experience issues when you connect to SharePoint
Team Services over the Extranet, verify that you can connect to SharePoint Team
Services over the Intranet.
Next, you must review various items that can cause issues during
the SharePoint Team Services installation or when you try to a make connection
from Microsoft Project Web Access.
- Are you installing SharePoint Team Services to a custom
site or to Default Web?
- Are Host Headers being used?
- Are Static Internet Protocol (IP) addresses being
used?
STSwiz.exe does not recognize sites with Host Headers, or
Static IP addresses.
- What account was used to run STSWiz.exe? The user
account must have DBO permissions in Microsoft SQL Server.
- Is Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server already installed
on the system? You cannot install SharePoint Portal Server and SharePoint Team
Services on the same computer.
- Can SharePoint Team Services Connect to Project Server?
- Do you have the site data that was provided on the
confirmation screen that you received after you completed
STSWiz.exe?
- What Windows account did you use to run
Pscomplus?
- In SQL Server, are permissions for the Microsoft
Windows account correctly set for DB_DataReader on the
SharePoint database?
- What command-line syntax did you use to run
Proxycfg.exe? You must run this command even if there is no proxy on your
network.
- Other items that can cause issues when you install
SharePoint Team Services:
- Is Antivirus software installed and started on the
SharePoint Team Services computer?
- What version of Microsoft Internet Explorer is
installed on the server? Internet Explorer 5.01 is required. However, Microsoft
recommends Internet Explorer version 5.5 or later.
- Are you trying to access SharePoint Team Services over
the Internet? If you are, see the Microsoft Project Server and the Internet white paper.
- What permissions are configured on the SharePoint Web
site? What permissions are configured on the Microsoft SharePoint
Administration Web site? Make sure that Integrated Windows
authentication is selected. In Microsoft SQL Server 2000, verify the
authentication type. To do so, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to
Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server, and
then click SQL Enterprise Manager.
- Expand Microsoft SQL Servers, and
then expand SQL Server Groups.
- Right-click your SQL server, and then click
Properties.
- Click the Security tab.
- Make sure SQL Server and Windows
is selected under Authentication.
- Click OK.
Troubleshoot Connectivity to Project Server
To troubleshoot general connection issues to Project Server,
follow these steps:
- Use the Microsoft Project Server COM+ Settings tool
(Pscomplus.exe) with a domain\admin account to test the connection.
PSComplus.exe is located in the drive:\Program
Files\Microsoft Project Server\Bin\1033 folder, where
drive is the drive where Windows is
installed.
- Run Pscomplus.exe again using an account (or accounts)
that were created to access the target technologies.
- Run the Proxy Configuration utility (Proxycfg). Use the
following command line:
proxycfg -d -p “proxyserver”
“<local>;ServerName;IPAddress;FQDN”
- Install Internet Explorer 6 or install the Q331971 fix for
Project Server.

PSVR2002: SharePoint Team Services Admin Operation in Project Web
Access Does Not Work
- Open Microsoft Project Web Access (PWA), and then click
Add a Web server running SharePoint Team Services. Try each of
the following for the Server Name:
- The Localhost.
- The Computer name of the SharePoint Team Services
server.
- The IP address for the SharePoint Team Services
computer.
- The Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) for the
SharePoint Team Services server, for example:
example-svr.Northamerica.corp.com
Troubleshoot Project Server Subwebs
To help troubleshoot issues with subwebs, follow these steps:
- Verify that the connection is not broken. To do so, follow
these steps:
- Log on as Administrator to Project Web Access
(PWA).
- Click the Admin page, and then click
Manage SharePoint Team Services.
- On the Modify Server page, click
Save Changes. Project Server will then try to validate the
connection to the server that is running SharePoint Team Services.
Troubleshoot Issues with Browsing or Prompting for the
Documents and Issues Feature
To troubleshoot issues with browsing, follow these steps:
- Select to browse in Microsoft Internet Information Services
Manager (IIS) from the Administrative site. This will determine if the subweb
is working.
- Do you receive an error message when you are
browsing?
- Can you connect to the SharePoint Team Services Subweb
HomeSite?
- For Internet issues, verify if you can click
Documents and Issues over the Intranet.
- When you click individual documents or issues, do you
receive an error message?
- If you receive an error message, verify that the
permissions to the Web site are set to Integrated Windows
Authentication.
- You may want to test and enable Anonymous Access to see
if you can bypass that challenge.
