"Some files may not have been exported" error message when you try to convert a bitmap image in Office

SYMPTOMS

When you try to convert a bitmap image to Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) format by using the Export feature in Microsoft Office Picture Manager 2003, you may receive the following error message:
Some files may not have been exported. Try to export the file again.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the image that you are trying to convert is encoded with either zero dots per inch (DPI) or fractional DPI (less than one dot per inch). Because of the limitations in the TIFF encoder in the GDI+ library in Microsoft Office 2003 and in the 2007 Microsoft Office programs, you cannot convert this type of image directly to TIFF format.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, export the images to the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) format first, and then convert the JPEG image to TIFF. Adjust the JPEG export options to select a custom compression setting of Larger files (highest quality) to make sure that there is as little visual information is lost through the JPEG conversion as possible.

To do this, follow these steps.

Step 1: Create the JPEG image

  1. Click the image that you want to convert to the TIFF format.
  2. On the File menu, click Export.
  3. In the Export with this file format list, click JPEG File Interchange Format (*.jpg).
  4. Click JPEG options.
  5. Click Select a custom compression setting, and then move the slider all the way to the right to Larger files (highest quality).
  6. Click Return to Export.
  7. Click OK.
This creates a JPEG version of your image that you can now convert to TIFF.

Step 2: Convert the image to TIFF

  1. Click the JPEG image that you created.
  2. On the File menu, click Export.
  3. Click TIFF Tagged Image File Format (*.tif).
  4. Click OK.
You can now delete the JPEG version of your image.
