PPT2002: Cannot Change Order for Slides in a Custom Show

SYMPTOMS

When you try to change the order of slides in a Custom Show in PowerPoint 2002, you may experience one of the following symptoms:

The slides may not change position as expected.
The slides may not move at all.
A different slide moves instead of the slide that you selected.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if one or more of the slides in the Custom Show were deleted from the presentation. The placeholder for the slide remains in the Custom Show, but it is not visible.

The global version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Office XP Service Pack 3.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, create a new Custom Show and then remove the affected Custom Show.

You can also try removing slides from the affected Custom Show. You will know when you have removed the invisible placeholder because the slide that you selected to be removed will not be removed from the Custom Show list when you click Remove.
