Part 2: Activate the fix

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Note If the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient\Parameters\ServerNotFoundCacheLifeTimeInSec registry subkey exists, then modify the existing value data in the Edit DWORD Value dialog box.

  1. Quit Word.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  4. Locate, and then click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient\Parameters.
  5. With the key selected, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD.
  6. Type ServerNotFoundCacheLifeTimeInSec, and then press ENTER.
  7. Right-click ServerNotFoundCacheLifeTimeInSec, and then click Modify.
  8. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, click Decimal.
  9. In the Value data box, type the number of seconds that Windows should spend looking for the template, the folder, or the share that is missing, moved, or renamed. For example, type 180 for 180 seconds. Then, click OK.
  10. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.

This code will change the attached template to Normal, but there are a number of caveats.

Warning Any use by you of the code that is provided in this example is at your own risk. Microsoft provides this macro code "as is" without warranty of any kind, either express or implied, including but not limited to the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. The following macro will loop through all the documents in a folder and change the old server name with the Normal.dot. If a document is password protected in anyway, the template will not be changed. The code will fail.

Dim strFilePath As String
Dim strPath As String
Dim intCounter As Integer
Dim strFileName As String
Dim OldServer As String
Dim objDoc As Document
Dim objTemplate As Template
Dim dlgTemplate As Dialog
Dim nServer As Integer

          Set objTemplate = objDoc.AttachedTemplate
          Set dlgTemplate = Dialogs(wdDialogToolsTemplates)

                 objDoc.AttachedTemplate = NormalTemplate
             End If
          strFileName = Dir()
          objDoc.Save
          objDoc.Close
