In Microsoft Outlook 2002, when you try to open an e-mail message that
you saved in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007
or in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003, you receive the following
error message:
The messaging interface has returned an
unknown error. If the problem persists, restart
Outlook.

This issue occurs when the e-mail message that you are
trying to read is encoded in Unicode format.

To work around this issue, when you save the e-mail message
in Outlook 2007 or in Outlook 2003, use a non-Unicode format. To do this, follow these steps:
| 1. | In Outlook,
click the e-mail message that you want to save. |
| 2. | On the File menu, click Save
As. |
| 3. | In the Save in box, click the location
where you want to save the file. |
| 4. | In the File name box, type a name for the
file. |
| 5. | In the Save as type box, click any file
type except Outlook Message Format - Unicode, and then click
Save. |
