You receive an error message when you open an e-mail message that you saved in Outlook 2007 or in Outlook 2003

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Outlook 2002, when you try to open an e-mail message that you saved in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 or in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003, you receive the following error message:
The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when the e-mail message that you are trying to read is encoded in Unicode format.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, when you save the e-mail message in Outlook 2007 or in Outlook 2003, use a non-Unicode format. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. In Outlook, click the e-mail message that you want to save.
  2. On the File menu, click Save As.
  3. In the Save in box, click the location where you want to save the file.
  4. In the File name box, type a name for the file.
  5. In the Save as type box, click any file type except Outlook Message Format - Unicode, and then click Save.
