BUG: When You Remove Visual C# .NET an Error May Occur If You Try to Install Visual Studio Tools for Office

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for the Microsoft Office System on a computer with Microsoft Visual Basic .NET Standard 2003 installed, you may receive the following error message:

Setup cannot detect the required version of Visual Studio .NET on this computer. Before you install this product, you must install a matching regional version of Visual Studio .NET 2003 or Visual Basic .NET 2003 Standard.

CAUSE

This error may occur if all the following conditions are sequentially true:

Visual Basic .NET Standard 2003 is installed on the computer.
Microsoft Visual C# .NET Standard 2003 is installed on the computer.
Visual C# .NET Standard 2003 is removed.
You try to install Visual Studio Tools for Office.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem and to install Visual Studio Tools for Office, follow these steps:

Run a Repair of the Visual Basic .NET Standard 2003 installation:
1. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
2. Select the Microsoft Visual Basic .NET Standard 2003 program in the list of installed programs, and then click Change/Remove.
3. In the Microsoft Visual Basic .NET Setup dialog box, select option 2 to repair the Visual Basic .NET installation.
4. In the Microsoft Visual Basic .NET Maintenance dialog box, click Repair/Reinstall.
5. When the installation is complete, click Done, and then click Exit.
6. Close the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, and then close Control Panel.
Start the installation for Visual Studio Tools for Office.

Steps to Reproduce the Problem

On a computer that is not running Visual Studio. NET 2003 and that does not have any Visual Studio .NET 2003 components installed, install Visual Basic .NET Standard 2003.
Install Visual C# .NET Standard 2003.
Remove Visual C# .NET Standard 2003.
Try to install Visual Studio Tools for Office.

Notice that you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.
