SYMPTOMS

You may experience any of the following symptoms:

When you right-click a file, Windows Explorer may quit unexpectedly, or you may receive an "Access Violation" error message, or you may receive the following error message:
Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
When you view the details of the error, you find an error signature similar to the following:

```
After you install Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4) or the 823980 security patch (MS03-026) documented in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 823980, you may not be able to open .max or .drf files in the following products:
- Discreet 3DS Max versions 2.x, 3.x, 4.x or 5.x
- Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2004
- Autodesk Building Systems 2004
- Autodesk VIZ 4
- Autodesk 3D Studio VIZ R3 or R3i

Hotfix Information

Important: Some scanning tools may incorrectly report that your computer does not have the 823980 security patch (MS03-026) installed after you install this hotfix. The 823980 security patch is included in this hotfix.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
