"Stop error code 0x0000000A" occurs during a period of high hard disk activity

SYMPTOMS

Your Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer may crash during a period of high disk activity. When this problem occurs, you receive the following Stop error message:

*** Stop 0x0000000A

When you troubleshoot this issue, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

When you restart the server, the same Stop error recurs.
When you remove many files and then restart the server, Windows may start successfully.
When you return the removed files to the server, the Stop error recurs.
When you use Cluster Administrator to bring a drive online, the Stop error recurs.

This problem occurs if the NTFS file system incorrectly extends the Master File Table (MFT) bitmap. In this scenario, NTFS may extend the bitmap size without actually extending the MFT file. A request to the cache manager is then unsuccessful because it extends beyond the end of file (EOF), resulting in the Stop error that is described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
