SYMPTOMS

In the following scenario, the display name of the sender of an e-mail message may contain a backslash character (\) instead of a double-byte character set (DBCS) character:
  • The e-mail message is sent from a Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server mailbox by using the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP).
  • The display name of the Exchange mailbox contains a DBCS character.
  • The e-mail message is converted to MIME encoding.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Exchange 2000 inserts quotation marks around a DBCS character in a message header. The standard Request for Comments (RFC) 2047 also encodes the message header. However, the display name is not always RFC 2047-encoded. When a display name is not RFC 2047-encoded and the display name contains quotation marks, the quotation marks are not removed when the message is converted to MIME encoding, and a backslash character (\) is inserted.

RESOLUTION
