You cannot use the Start menu shortcut to start Visio 2003 Professional

When you click the Microsoft Office Visio 2003 shortcut on the Microsoft Office menu (click Start, and then point to All Programs) to start your installed copy of Visio Professional 2003, an installation of Visio Standard 2003 may start and then quit.

This problem may occur if you have Visio Professional 2003 installed and you also have an advertised shortcut for Visio Standard 2003 installed on your computer.

When you install Visio Professional 2003, a shortcut is created on the Microsoft Office menu so that you can start Office Visio Professional 2003. If you try to install Visio Standard 2003 by clicking an advertised shortcut or by installing from a product CD, the installation will not complete successfully because installing a down-level version (Standard verses Professional) of the same product version is not permitted.

As a result of the blocked installation of Visio Standard 2003, the Microsoft Office Visio 2003 shortcut on the Microsoft Office menu has been associated with the down-level version of Visio Standard 2003. If you try to start Visio Professional 2003 from the Microsoft Office Visio 2003 shortcut on the Microsoft Office menu, the Visio Standard 2003 Setup tries to install Visio Standard to your computer again, and again the down-level installation is blocked.

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

1. On the Office menu that is not functional, right-click the Microsoft Office Visio 2003 shortcut, and then click Delete.
2. Click Delete Shortcut to close the following message:
   Deleting the shortcut to Microsoft Visio Standard 2003 only removes the icon. It does not uninstall the program.
3. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
4. Click Add or Remove Programs.
5. In Change or Remove Programs, click Microsoft Office Visio Professional 2003, and then click Change.
6. In Microsoft Office Visio Professional 2003 Setup, click Reinstall or Repair, and then click Next to complete the repair of Visio Professional 2003.
