You Receive an "Account Unknown" Message When You Assign a Permission to a File or You Add a Member to a Group

SYMPTOMS

When you try to assign a permission to a file or to add a member to a group, an Object Picker dialog box may display the message "Account unknown." You may also receive the following error message:

This problem occurs because Windows cannot resolve security identifiers (SIDs) to names. An SID is a numeric value that identifies a user or group. For each access control entry (ACE), an SID identifies the user or the group for whom access is permitted, denied, or audited.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix Information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
