WD2002: You Cannot Underline a Tab That Is in a Numbered List

The following symptoms may occur in Word 2002:

• If you create a numbered list in a document, you cannot underline the tab that is between the number and the text.
  
  -or-
• If you open a document that was created in an earlier version of Microsoft Word that already had a numbered list with the tab between the number and the text underlined, the tab is no longer underlined. For example, the following underlined list
  
  

  1. This is underlined, numbered text.
     -------------------------------------

  appears as follows in Word 2002:

   1.  This is underlined, numbered text.
   --  ----------------------------------

Part 2: Activate the Update

To activate this fix, follow these steps:

1. Quit Word.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
4. Locate, and then click to select the following registry key:
   HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Options
5. With the preceding key selected, on the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD.
6. Type NumberingGapUL, and then press ENTER.
7. Right-click NumberingGapUL, and then click Modify.
8. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
9. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Office XP Service Pack 3.
