Word 2003 or PowerPoint 2003 files that have certain WMF and EMF metafiles open slowly

When you try to open Microsoft Office Word 2003 or Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 files that have the following criteria

• The files have certain Windows Metafile Format (WMF) and Enhanced Metafile Format (EMF) metafiles.
  
  -and-
• The WMF and EMF metafiles are less than 1 megabyte (MB).
  
  -and-
• The WMF and EMF metafiles have many StretchDIBit calls.

the files are extremely slow to open.

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:

1. Select the picture object in the file that is rendering slowly.
2. Click Edit, and then click Cut.
3. Click Edit, and then click Paste Special.
4. Click Picture from the As: box.
   
   Note Any Picture option, except JPEG, will work correctly when you use this method.
5. Click OK.
6. Reposition and resize the resulting picture object as necessary in the file.
