"Windows Media Player Has Encountered a Problem" Error Message When You Try to Start Windows Media Player

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start Microsoft Windows Media Player, you may receive the following error message:

Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to shut down - "error signature app name wmplayer.exe app ver 8.0.0.4477 mod name msvcrt.dll mode version 7.0.2600.0 offset 00034748"

CAUSE

This error may occur if the system time is not set correctly, if the basic input/output system (BIOS) time is not set correctly, or both.

RESOLUTION

To set the correct system time, follow these steps:

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options.
Click Date and Time.
In the Date section, click the correct day, month, and year.
In the Time section, type or select the correct hour, minutes, and seconds.
Click the Time Zone tab.
Click to select your time zone from the list of time zones, and then click OK.
