Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Page_Load event fires two times

SYMPTOMS

If you create a Web page, and then you set the Web page as the default page in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS), the Page_Load event fires two times if SmartNav is set to true. This behavior occurs on a computer that is running the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next .NET Framework 1.1 service pack that contains this hotfix.

The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

Steps to reproduce the behavior

Create an ASPX Web page.
Set smartnavigation=true.
Set the page as the default page in IIS.
In your browser, view the Web site. Do not do this at the Web page level. For example, visit the following Web site:
http://localhost/applicationname
Click a button on the page. The following behavior occurs:
1. The Page_Load event fires.
2. The click event fires.
3. The Page_Load event fires again.
