Microsoft has released an update for Microsoft Office 2003. This update fixes a problem that occurs when you try to open or to save a Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 file, a Microsoft Office Word 2003 file, or a Microsoft Office Excel 2003 file that includes an OfficeArt shape that was previously modified and saved in an earlier version of Microsoft Office. When a PowerPoint 2003 file, a Word 2003 file, or a Excel 2003 file is opened in an earlier version of Office, empty "complex" properties may be introduced into the file and a bit may be changed in the file record that describes these properties. Earlier version of Office will ignore this bit value but when this bit value is detected in Office 2003, you may experience the following symptoms:

•	The document may not open completely.
•	The document may be corrupted.
•	The document may open but with missing content.
•	You might receive an error message.

When you open a PowerPoint presentation in PowerPoint 2003, you may receive one of the following error messages where filename is the name of the file that you are trying to open: When you open a PowerPoint presentation in PowerPoint Viewer 2003, you may receive the following error message where filename is the name of the file that you are trying to open: Note Although these symptoms appear when you use the PowerPoint 2003 Viewer, the critical update should not be installed unless both Office 2003 and PowerPoint 2003 are also installed because this update will not correct the issue in the downloaded viewer. This update will only correct the issue in the viewer that is included in Office 2003 or PowerPoint 2003.

To update PowerPoint Viewer 2003, use one of the following methods:

•	If you are using PowerPoint Viewer 2003 that is included with Microsoft Office 2003 or with Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 and is distributed as part of the Package for CD feature, install Microsoft Office Service Pack 1. 870924 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870924/) How to obtain the latest service pack for Office 2003
•	If you previously installed PowerPoint Viewer 2003 from the Web, you can replace it with the latest version of PowerPoint Viewer 2003. How to download and install the update

If you installed Office from a CD-ROM, you have the following two options:

•	Use the Office Product Updates Web site to automatically install all the latest updates that include all available service packs and public updates.
•	Install only the Office 2003 Update: KB828041 by following the steps that are described later in this article.

Note We recommend that you install the client update by using the Office Product Updates Web site. The Office Product Updates Web site detects your particular installation of Microsoft Office and prompts you to install exactly what you must have to make sure that your Office installation is completely up-to-date.

To download and install the client update, follow these steps:

1.	Click Save to save the Office2003-kb828041-client-enu.exe file to the selected folder.
2.	In Microsoft Windows Explorer, double-click Office2003-kb828041-client-enu.exe.
3.	If you are prompted to install the update, click Yes.
4.	Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
5.	Insert your Office 2003 CD-ROM if you are prompted to do so, and then click OK.
6.	When you receive a message that indicates that you must restart your system for the changes to take effect, click Yes.

Note After you install the update, you cannot remove it. To revert to an installation before the update was installed, you must remove Office 2003, and then install it again from the original CD-ROM.

Administrative update

If you installed your Office 2003 product from a server location, the server administrator must update the server location with the administrative update and deploy that update to your computer.

If you are the server administrator, download the administrative update. To do this, follow these steps:

1.	Click Save to save the office2003-KB828041-Fullfile-ENU.exe file to the selected folder.

3.	If you are prompted to install the update, click Yes.
4.	Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
5.	In the Type the location where you want to place the extracted files box, type c:\828041, and then click OK.
6.	Click Yes when you are prompted to create the folder.
7.	If you are familiar with the procedure for updating your administrative installation, click Start, and then click Run. How to determine whether the update is installed

The update contains updated versions of the following files:

To determine the version of Office 2003 that is installed on your computer, follow these steps.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

1.	Click Start, and then click Search.
2.	In the Search Results pane, click All files and folders under Search Companion.
3.	In the All or part of the file name box, type Mso.dll, and then click Search.
4.	In the list of files, locate the Mso.dll file, right-click the file, and then click Properties. Note If the Search Results pane contains multiple Mso.dll files, locate the Mso.dll file that is in the following location. drive:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE11 where drive is the disk drive where Microsoft Windows was installed.
5.	On the Version tab, determine the version of the Mso.dll file that is installed on your computer.
