MORE INFORMATION

The following is a list of the supported methods for installing Office 2003 on a workstation:
Run Setup from an Office 2003 CD-ROM.
Run Setup from a server where a network image (Administrative install or compressed CD image) of Office 2003 is stored. This image includes tools that large organizations may use to run the Microsoft Office Setup program, for example, Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS).
Use Group Policy to assign or publish Office 2003 for computers with Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows XP, or Microsoft Windows Server 2003.

Note Office 2003 can be installed on a dual-boot computer.

For additional information about how to install Office 2003 on a dual-boot computer, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Two additional methods for installing Office 2003 include:
Create and distribute a custom CD-ROM that is based on the Office 2003 CD-ROM.
Create a hard-disk image, and then replicate it on the users' computers.
Note If you are using Microsoft's Professional Support offering, and you are using either of these two additional installation methods, you can receive support only if the deployment is part of an Office Deployment Advisory Service (ODAS) case.

For additional information about services available through an ODAS case, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
297033 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297033/) Description of the Office Deployment Advisory service
To create a system image that includes Microsoft Office 2003, follow these steps:
1.Perform a clean installation of the operating system (Office 2003 requires Microsoft Windows 2000, service pack 3 (SP3) or later, and Windows XP or later).
2.Perform a clean installation of Office 2003 with the features and preferences that you want.
3.Create a system image (copy) of the computer. This image can be either a partition image or a full hard disk image.
4.You can then restore the system image onto the target computers.
Note The image must be created on a computer that has hardware that is similar to the target computers, and the operating system must match the operating system that is on the target computers.

Microsoft cannot fully support image installations that are created by using a third-party utility for the following reason: Microsoft cannot guarantee the accuracy of a third-party product to successfully install Microsoft Office by installing all the necessary files to the correct locations and by creating all required registry entries.

Product Support Engineers can provide only "commercially reasonable effort" support on the actual image file that is used to install Office 2003. Product Support Engineers will continue to support the Office 2003 applications, and the deployment of those applications, that are listed under supported methods. However, support for the actual image will be limited to "commercially reasonable effort" only. "Commercially reasonable effort" support for the image file includes troubleshooting and reverse engineering troubleshooting.

Note To use reverse engineering troubleshooting means to remove non-Microsoft components or to remove individual Microsoft components as a troubleshooting tactic.

General Guidelines for Troubleshooting Installation of Office

If you have problems running the Office Setup program, contact Microsoft Product Support Services. If you have problems installing Microsoft Office by using a Microsoft utility other than the Setup program, contact the correct Microsoft product support group. If you are using a third-party utility, contact the manufacturer of that product.

Use the following methods to troubleshoot problems that you are having when you install Office:
Determine whether the problem occurs only on one computer.

To do this, reinstall Office on the problem computer by using the method that you used to install the current installation of Office. If the problem is not corrected, run Setup.
Determine whether the problem occurs on multiple computers or for multiple users.

To do this, run Setup on another computer, or log on to the computer as a user, and then run Setup. If the problem is corrected, the previous method of installing Office is not successful. If you used a third-party utility, contact the manufacturer of that utility. If running Setup does not correct the problem, contact Microsoft Product Support Services.
