Pen, Highlighter, and Text Annotations are not available in Office Document Imaging

When you try to use the Pen, the Highlighter, or the Text tools on the Annotation toolbar in Microsoft Office Document Imaging, the tools may not function. Additionally, any annotations that were previously made on the file are not visible in Microsoft Office Document Imaging.

This behavior occurs when Microsoft Handwriting Component is not installed. Microsoft Handwriting Component is installed with the following Microsoft products:

• Microsoft Office Outlook 2003
• Microsoft Office Publisher 2003
• Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003
• Microsoft Office OneNote 2003
• Microsoft Office InfoPath 2003
• Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

To resolve this behavior, install the Microsoft Handwriting Component feature. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
3. Click your version of Microsoft Office 2003, and then click Change.
4. Click Add or Remove Features, and then click Next.
5. Click to select the Choose advanced customization of applications check box, and then click Next.
6. Under Choose update options for applications and tools, expand Office Shared Features.
7. Click the drop down menu next to Microsoft Handwriting Component, and then click Run from My Computer.
8. Click Update.
